Guitar Adjustment For Tuning Problems

Guitars go out of tune for a range of reasons. These reasons include problems with the guitar hardware set up and poor fitting of strings. The most common guess is that the strings haven't been put on the guitar with a good technique. This leads to the strings slipping as soon as the tension on them varies and this in turn makes the guitar go out of tune.

When restringing an electric guitar or an acoustic guitar it isn't enough to just put the string straight through the hole in the peg and wind it on a few turns. This is typically the way that guitars turn from the manufacturer, but this technique unmistakably isn't enough to utter the tuning of the guitar. The best recipe that I have seen involves first tying the string on and then using the windings on the machine head to trap the string. This has the supervene of causing the string to grip tighter on the machine head as more tension is put on the string. This in turn helps to utter the tuning of the strings. It is especially useful if you are doing a lot of string bending which is likely to put extra tension on the string at the machine head.

The first guitar adjustment to do is to attach the string to the tail piece and then put it over the bridge, up the neck and straight through the hole in the tuning peg. Pull the string tight and then pull it back about 5cm. Bend the end of the string round the tuning peg and pass it under the main part of the string. You then bend the string back over the main part of the string and make it stand up vertically. You may need to hold the end of the string in this position, while you wind the machine head to tighten the string. As the string tightens the windings will lay over the vertical end of the string. This is the prominent part because these are the windings that will stop the string slipping and the guitar going out of tune.

Once you have fitted all of the strings in this way you should stretch the strings a few times by pulling them away from the fret board. Check the tuning each time until each string remains in tune.
